Vintage Navajo Indian Silver Petrified Wood Scenic Pin Landscape Brooch 1930s 40. With a most effective combination of petrified wood and silver, this vintage Native American brooch is handsome and dramatic. The base is a plaque of silver with scalloped edges and the wood's bezel-setting is surrounded with loops of silver "rope, " the bottom layer of which sits on the scallops while the top layer is offset and angled slightly upwards, protruding from the edge, looking almost like weaving. This frames the stone, giving it a finished look and setting it off like a painting.
And indeed, it looks like a landscape scene where the viewer peeks through a parted curtain of trees to see a sunset over a lake, perhaps. The artist skillfully cut and set the stone to bring out the colors and the serene design. The patterns and the colors are painterly, appearing to have depth, dimension and texture.
The brooch measures about 1-7/8" wide by about 1-1/2" tall by about 1/4 deep. It is not signed but is sterling or a slightly lower grade of silver. It is in Very Good vintage condition with just surface dirt and scratches, including a deeper one you can see at the bottom of the petrified gleaming wood just to the right of center, which is entirely stable (and not unusual in this material). And there are the usual inconsistencies in execution (noted in the twisted silver loops) that only add to the piece's hand made charm and give a sense of the hand of the artist. There are no flaws of consequence and this brooch is quite powerful. With its striking combination of silver and petrified wood, the pin is dramatic and strong; eye catching and so handsome.
