Vintage Hopi Victor Coochwytewa Sterling Silver Belt Buckle

Offered is a very special sterling silver overlay belt buckle designed by renowned Arizona Hopi Indian Victor Coochwytewa (born 1922). WESTERNWEAR is a fashion trend! Even the Wall Street Journal says so! Victor lived on the Hopi second mesa. This buckle shows the mesa and a figure caring for his corn.

Corn is quite sacred to the Hopi and particularly to Victor so this buckle is special. The buckle is designed for a one and half-inch belt. It measures approximately 3 inches inches wide and 2 inches high.

The reverse side shows Victor's hallmark of rain clouds. The buckle shows slight wear (see detailed image with some scratches highlighted). Victor Coochwytewa was one of three Native American elders chosen as Arizona Indian Living Treasures at the seventh annual AILTA award ceremony held in Phoenix in September 1994.

He is considered to be one of the great Master Silversmiths that emerged from the classes offered to returning veterans by Paul Saufkie and Fred Kabotie. I first met Victor at his home on Second Mesa in 1985. He and his wife invited me graciously into his home where they were surrounded by grandchildren and large basins full of blue corn he had grown.

He was as proud of his corn as he was of his silver-making. We talked about corn, grandchildren and hunting. He like to hunt deer on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (some of the best areas for mule deer), desert bighorn sheep and antelope.

I bought this piece from him there. Along with the buckle I will send an ear of Victor's corn I bought from him.
