In the late 20s when traditional jewelry making materials became scarce, Santo Domingo artists turned to such materials as car battery casings, broken phonograph records and bright colored celluloid from combs and other household goods. By the 1930s, many Santo Domingo artists had developed a whole new style of folk-art jewelry made of found materials, sun-bleached animal bone, local gypsum, tiny chips of turquoise and modern plastics. The materials were gathered on rangelands, trash dumps, salvage yards and dime stores. Whole families took part in the making of these whimsical colorful necklaces. And, the creation of these necklace became a new economic enterprise for the pueblo. Tourists travelling on the route 66 loved these necklaces.
