Old Santo Domingo Pueblo'depression''battery' earrings, turquoise, shell
Old Native American Pueblo Indian jewelry, this is a pair of Santo Domingo'depression era' earrings. This style and technique arose around 1930 when Pueblo artists began using very inexpensive materials to create a distinctive type of jewelry for themselves occasionally but mostly for tourists.
The artists used whatever material was available including plastics (battery casings, toothbrushes, combs, old records), some stones and shells and bone and, gypsum which is available near Albuquerque. These earrings are plastic, turquoise, shell and silver. The blue chips are both plastic and turquoise.
The white on the bottom of each earring is shell. The earrings each have a silver wire loop and new sterling hooks. The earrings are each about 1 1/4" long (not including the wire loop) x 5/8" wide.Earring, including the hook are 2 1/4 long. Please see all the photos for details and full condition.
